Update [February 10, 2018]: After numerous uncertainties over the status of Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ Oreo update, T-Mobile has finally confirmed that the OS will be rolled out to the 3-year old handset. The American carrier has updated its software update page for the Galaxy S6 Edge+, indicating that it has agreed with Samsung to update the S6 Edge+ to Android Oreo, but we don’t know when the OS will start rolling out.

Update [ February 3, 2018] According to fresh developments, which do not come as a big surprise to us, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus won’t receive Oreo. Samsung reps have a tendency of not getting software updates’ details right and it seems this poor run won’t end anytime soon.

A leaked Galaxy Note 8 Oreo build was found to contain files with names of Samsung phones that will be updated to Android Oreo. On the list, there was no place for the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. Although some might feel a little hard done by this new development, which is not an official communication, it makes sense because the S6 Edge Plus has already received two OS upgrades and will soon be three years old. So, if you have been dreaming to receive Android 8.0 OTA on your soon-to-be 3-year old S6 Edge Plus, dream no more!

Update [November 27, 2017]: It seems we are in for a surprise! A good one, in case you’re wondering. A new rumor swirling around suggests that Samsung would bring a taste of Oreo to Galaxy S6 Edge+ as well, and might follow the three year update cycle for major Android OS updates. Awesome! We weren’t expecting this, and going by past experience, we really thought Nougat OS was the best Galaxy S6 Edge+ users would get, but now it seems that Samsung could bestow the S6 Edge Plus with Android 8.0 update as well.

For the users of Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, the Oreo update is something that they may have to look upon with lots of envy — as theirs is a Samsung flagship device of yesteryear for which the support as regards major Android update drops now.

The S6 Edge Plus has seen its update cycle reach its end as regards major updates that involve change in Android OS version, while Samsung would keep rolling out monthly security patches in month or two’s time. As far as Samsung’s S series is concerned, the only two devices are gonna get the Oreo update: this year’s Galaxy S8, and last year’s Galaxy S7.

However, there remains hope that a custom ROM based on Android 8.0, like LineageOS 15, becomes available for the S6 Edge Plus users, so that can have a run with Android 8.0, the latest Android has on offer.

The S6 Edge Plus has received the sweetness of Android 7.0 Nougat OS, and the Android 7.1.1 looks next stop. We have got the firmware for your Galaxy S6 Edge Plus below, along with the changelog that includes the monthly security patch each update involves.

Android 8.0 Oreo update release details

Update [November 27, 2017]: New report suggest Samsung could bring Oreo to Galaxy S6 Edge Plus as well, and might follow the three year update cycle for major Android OS updates. Awesome! Although this comes from a chat with Samsung representatives, we would wait for something more official to believe it.

Samsung released the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus on Android 5.1.1, and the device was updated to Marshmallow as well as Nougat. Right now, it’s running Android 7.0, and while we’d say that it looks likely — not confirmed — to get Android 7.1.1 update, the Android 8.0 looks very unlikely now. Unless Samsung surprises us, really.

AT&T Galaxy S6 Edge Plus (SM-G928A)

Update [November 10, 2017]: AT&T has begun rollout of its new security update, as version G928AUCS6EQH1. The OTA fixes the Blueborne security flaw, and install latest monthly patch for the month of September and October 2017.

Android OS update details:

  • Android 7.0: Released
  • Android 7.1.1: Not expected
  • Android 8.0: Not expected as device is not eligible

As you would expect, not many firmwares are available for the AT&T S6 Edge+ handset. Well, firmware for AT&T phones do not come out generally like other variants do, so we have to make-do with this.

Actually, at the moment, you have second latest update in software version G928AUCS4EQG1 available for download, which means that after installing it to go back to stock, you need just one OTA to reach latest software version, which is, build G928AUCS4EQH1. Not bad, eh!

Galaxy-Note-5-update

Update [February 10, 2018]: After numerous uncertainties over the status of Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Oreo update, T-Mobile has finally confirmed that the OS will be rolled out to the nearly 3-year old handset. The American carrier has updated its software update page for the Galaxy Note 5, indicating that it has agreed with Samsung to update the Note 5 to Android Oreo, but we don’t know when the OS will start rolling out.

Note-5-Oreo

Update [ February 3, 2018] According to fresh developments, which do not come as a big surprise to us, the Galaxy Note 5 won’t receive Oreo. Samsung reps have a tendency of not getting software updates’ details right and it seems this poor run won’t end anytime soon.

A leaked Galaxy Note 8 Oreo build was found to contain files with names of Samsung phones that will be updated to Android Oreo. On the list, there was no place for the Galaxy Note 5. Although some might feel a little hard done by this new development, which is not an official communication, it makes sense because the Note 5 has already received two OS upgrades and will soon be three years old.

Given its raw power and the fact that it is powered by an Exynos processor, you won’t be short of Oreo-based custom ROMs that are regularly maintained with updates. If you like such kind of stuff, the XDA Developers forums is a great place to begin your ROM hunting.

Update [November 27, 2017]: It seems we are in for a surprise! A good one, in case you’re wondering. A new rumor swirling around suggests that Samsung would bring a taste of Oreo to Galaxy S6 Edge as well, and might follow the three year update cycle for major Android OS updates. Awesome! We weren’t expecting this, and going by past experience, we really thought Nougat OS was the best Galaxy S6 Edge users would get, but now it seems that Samsung could bestow the S6 Edge with Android 8.0 update as well.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 seems a distant memory already, but if you consider that the Note 7 was recalled back by Samsung, and its second entry into market as Note FE isn’t available in major markets, all Samsung Note fans have on offer is the very-pricey option in Note 8, and the 2-year old Note 5. But if you talk Samsung’s Oreo update, the latest Note phablet in Galaxy Note 8 is the only Samsung Note handset to get you that. Surprised? Well, look below for more info.

That is why we aren’t surprised to see many people still don the Galaxy Note 5, and here’s all you need about its software. First up, here you will find the latest system updates for the Galaxy Note 5, for the unlocked variant sold by Samsung world over, plus the carrier variants sold in US at Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc. Besides the changelog for the OTA updates given in the table below, you also get the download link of the update’s firmware, which helps you in installing the update yourself, on your Windows PC. Have fun, and do let us know if you need any help.

Galaxy Note 5 Oreo eligibility and release info

The much-loved Galaxy Note 5 is now well over two years old, and has also already received two major Android OS updates in Marshmallow and Nougat. So, there is no chance Samsung would bring the Oreo to Note 5.

Whether you are using carrier locked Note 5 at AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon, or an unlocked one, there won’t be an official Android 8.0 update for you. Sorry!

International Galaxy Note 5 (SM-N920C/i/G)

Android 7.1.1 release: Q1 2018 (low probability, may not be released at all)

Android 8.0 release: Not eligible

Samsung has revealed that they plan to release the Oreo for Galaxy S8 in January 2018, and they are expected to follow the S8 sets with Note 8, and S7 sets. We don’t think they would develop 8.0 update for the Note FE (new Note 7), but we doubt they would release 8.0 update for Note 5 (any variant).

AT&T Galaxy Note 5 (SM-N920A)

Update [November 10, 2017]: AT&T is not rolling our new OTA update as version N920AUCS6EQH1, one that fixes the security issue called Blueborne. you also get security patch for the last two months, September and October 2017. For what it’s worth, although the Note isn’t receiving the official Android 8.0 from Samsung, the company has now begun rollout of its Android 8.0 beta update for Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus handsets in Korea, US and UK. If you have a S8/S8+ in US, you can install Oreo even without needing to register under the beta program — sweet hack!

Galaxy S6 Edge update: Android 8.0 Oreo in plans? May patch available at Verizon variant

Galaxy-S6-Edge-Android-8.0-update

Update [February 10, 2018]: After numerous uncertainties over the status of Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Oreo update, T-Mobile has finally confirmed that the OS will be rolled out to the 3-year old handset. The American carrier has updated its software update page for the Galaxy S6 Edge, indicating that it has agreed with Samsung to update the S6 Edge to Android Oreo, but we don’t know when the OS will start rolling out.

S6-Edge-Oreo

Update [ February 3, 2018] According to fresh developments, which do not come as a big surprise to us, the Galaxy S6 Edge won’t receive Oreo. Samsung reps have a tendency of not getting software updates’ details right and it seems this poor run won’t end anytime soon.

A leaked Galaxy Note 8 Oreo build was found to contain files with names of Samsung phones that will be updated to Android Oreo. On the list, there was no place for the Galaxy S6 Edge. Although some might feel a little hard done by this new development, which is not an official communication, it makes sense because the S6 Edge has already received two OS upgrades and will soon be three years old, which makes it ineligible for Android 8.0 OTA.

Update [January 16, 2018]: A new report indicates that Samsung might begin rolling out the Android 8.0 update for the Galaxy S6 as early as next month, February 2018.

Captu1111re

Update [November 27, 2017]: It seems we are in for a surprise! A good one, in case you’re wondering. A new rumor swirling around suggests that Samsung would bring a taste of Oreo to Galaxy S6 Edge as well, and might follow the three-year update cycle for major Android OS updates. Awesome! We weren’t expecting this, and going by past experience, we really thought Nougat OS was the best Galaxy S6 Edge users would get, but now it seems that Samsung could bestow the S6 Edge with Android 8.0 update as well.

Now that the Galaxy S6 Edge is more than two years old, it has reached the end of life stage. Which basically means that Samsung would not release an Oreo update for the Galaxy S6 Edge. Which also means that custom ROM is the only was S6 Edge users can get a taste of Android 8.0, this we would recommend you keeping a watch on our LineageOS 15.0 downloads page, as we do think that sometime later, an Oreo ROM would be available for the S6 Edge.

The whole Oreo scenario apart, this page gets you firmware download link of the major updates for the S6 Edge, along with info on what monthly security patch the given software update packs in.

Galaxy S6 Edge Android 8.0 update release details

Update [November 27, 2017]: New report suggests Samsung could bring Oreo to Galaxy S6 Edge as well, and might follow the three-year update cycle for major Android OS updates. Awesome! Although this comes from a chat with Samsung representatives, we would wait for something more official to believe it.

Usually, OEMs do not provide software update after 18 months for a device, or 24 months if the device we’re talking about is a flagship one, like the Galaxy S6 Edge here. But given the fact has S6 Edge is way older now, over the flagship eligibility period of the update too, it’s obvious from Samsung to not plan the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the device.

However, we do expect the usual security patches to roll out as an OTA monthly or bi-monthly, and a last big update to Android 7.1.1 sometime in October 2017.

Even though we’re talking Nougat updates left and right these days, there are bunch of Android users who are still waiting — patiently, we must say — for the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update to arrive as an OTA for their device.

The Japanese OEM, Sharp, is yet to provide Marshmallow update to some of ts devices, all of which belong to AQUOS  branding. We’re talking about AQUOS Zeta, AQUOS Mini, AQUOS Serir, AQUOS Serie Mini and AQUOS Compact.

The good news though, is the Android 6.0.1 build for these AQUOS sets just showed up at WiFi Alliance, which earlier in the day brought us ample hint of Galaxy S6 Nougat update in preparation for Verizon and Sprint Galaxy S6.

Check out the image at the top, which tells you that Android 6.0 build has been successfully certified for Sharp AQUOS Serie Mini, while the image below gets you the all the devices listed thereat, with Marshmallow approved.

ZTE Blade A2 Android 6.0 Marshmallow release nears, spotted on GFXBench

The ZTE blade A2 might be getting its impending Marshmallow update very soon as the device was just spotted being tested on popular benchmarking software, GFXBench.

It’s a rather disappointing fact considering that the device, which was released in the June of 2016 is still awaiting for the marshmallow update.

Taking in account of the slow roll out of updates by the company and the device being a mid range one, the chances of the Blade A2 being updated to Nougat is almost slim to none.

The ZTE Blade A2 features a 5-inch HD (720 x 1280 pixels) IPS 2.5D display. It is powered by an Octa-core MediaTek MT6750 clocked at 1.5GHz coupled with 2GB of RAM. There is 16GB storage on board and it supports expandable storage via microSD card (up to 128GB). The device was launched with Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active has received two major OS upgrades following its debut with Lollipop back in 2015. With that said, there won’t be another OS upgrade for the S6 Active, including the latest Android 9 Pie update. For fans of custom ROMs, there isn’t so much out there, so don’t get your hopes high in regards to Pie ROMs.

  • Not eligible for Android 8.0 and Android 9 update

We expect Samsung to keep rolling out the security patches on a monthly basis as an OTA.

While in case you were hoping for the Android 8.0 update via a custom ROM, well we don’t think that’s gonna happen either. We don’t think there will be a Galaxy S6 Active LineageOS 15.0 ROM, or any other Android 8.0 ROM, would become available anytime soon.

Oppo F1 Plus spotted running Android 6.0 Marshmallow on GFXBench

The Oppo F1 Plus was released in March last year and came with Android 5.1 on board. Now, after more than 10 months, the smartphone might be getting an update to Marshmallow. An Oppo device with the same specs as the F1 Plus has showed up on GFXBench.

A Google search on the device model didn’t really tell us that it is the Oppo F1 Plus, but we think it is. Going by the specifications, the Oppo R6091 is the F1 Plus, except for the processor, which is different. GFXBench has been known to make this type of errors though. The listing shows that an Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware is being tested on the device.

The smartphone came with a 5.5 inch 1080p display, a MediaTek MT6755 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera, and a 16MP front camera for the selfie addicts. It is powered by a 2850mAh battery.

It is about time that Oppo released a new software update for some of its devices from 2016. The company is least bothered about software updates, so it is nice to see that at least one device is being updated to Marshmallow. Do not have high hopes for a Nougat update though, that will probably not happen.

Samsung Galaxy J3 receives PL3 update to fix critical security vulnerability

Galaxy-J3

The Galaxy J3 from Samsung’s budget division has received a Marshmallow based update today. The 173MB OTA update with build no J320FXXU0APL3 brings bug fixes, performance and stability improvements and mainly provides the patch for a critical security vulnerability.

Although, Samsung didn’t mention the vulnerability in question, but we guess it would be the DirtyCow root exploit that was found in mainstream Linux kernel (which Android also uses) some time back.

The J3 aims to compete with Motorola’s Moto E Power and other such devices mainly in budget oriented markets like India. The smartphone features the-not-so-popular Spreadtrum SC9830 SoC along with 1.5GB of RAM, a 5-inch 720p display and a moderate 2300mAh battery.

Samsung does have a tendency to price their budget devices slightly higher than the competing ones. It’s loyal customers who’ve had some history with Samsung who opt for devices like the J3 providing Samsung the saving grace it needs in the budget department.

Pushing aside the budget sector, Samsung is planning big according to a leak revealing their plans for the upcoming foldable smartphones.

Galaxy S8 Firmware download: Android 8.0 Oreo available!

You will find the firmware for the Galaxy S8 smartphone here, including the new Android 8.0 Oreo update software version. Not only Oreo, we also have the Android 7.0 Nougat firmware available below, so in case you wish to downgrade from Oreo OTA to Nougat, just download the latest Android 7.0 firmware for your device (go by exact model no.) and install that, and then be sure to not update the device back to Oreo.

You have to install firmware meant for the exact model no. of your device, so check out that first before downloading the firmware. Check out the sections below to identify model no. of your handset, and a way to install the firmware given in the table below for various model no. of the S8.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Firmware

All the Galaxy S8 models in the US come with the same model no. now, but their firmware is available separately. But because their firmware is cross-compatible, meaning you can flash a firmware meant strictly for T-Mobile Galaxy S8 on AT&T S8, and that won’t cause any problem — your AT&T SIM would work just alright. Nonetheless, we have still segregated firmware for respective carrier models, because we can, and it feels safer too.

How to identify firmware exactly meant for your carrier in the USA?

Well, the US Galaxy S8 comes with model no. SM-G950U for all carriers (SM-G950U1 is an unlocked device), so you have to find the SM-G950U firmware that ends with the code of your carrier. The carrier codes are as follows:

  • ATT for AT&T Galaxy S8
  • SPR for Sprint Galaxy S8
  • TMB for T-Mobile Galaxy S8
  • VZW for Verizon Wireless Galaxy S8
  • USC for US Cellular Galaxy S8

Android 8.0 Oreo firmware

Yes, the Android 8.0 update is now available as firmware for the Galaxy S8. Check the model no. of your device first, and then download the latest Android 8.0 update firmware available in the table below for that exact model number.

It’s easy.

Firmware cross-compatibility

You can install any firmware for the model no. SM-G950U on your device as it doesn’t matter as long as the model no. remains same. It would fully work on your AT&T Galaxy S8.

Yes, this means that you can install a Verizon/T-Mobile S8 firmware on your AT&T S8, and vice versa. The only difference will be the extra apps (read: bloatware) that each carrier may out in or not put in, in which case, you are always better off AT&T firmware.

Galaxy S8 firmware download

The other firmware files are as per your device’s model no., as usual, so no code-finding-in-firmware-name-exercise required for models other than SM-G950U (US model).

Note: Do not install SM-G950U1 firmware on SM-G950U device, or vice-versa. Also, Canadian Galaxy S8 comes with model no. SM-G950W.

A proper AT&T S8 firmware, anyway! It’s common to not find a lot of firmware files for AT&T model of Samsung devices. Well, that’s the case with Samsung’s S8 too, and thus you won’t find a particular firmware for AT&T variant above, but we do have one firmware for the AT&T Galaxy S8, given below.

  • AT&T S8 only – version G950USQS1AQF7 – Android 7.0 Nougat – G950USQS1AQF7_ATT_ATT.zip
  • More firmware will be added here when available.
  • Of course, you can install T-Mobile or Verizon S8’s firmware on your AT&T S8. And vice versa.

Download the firmware as per your device’s model no. from below.

How to download the correct firmware file

This is an important part!

Be sure to check and find the correct model no. of your Galaxy A5. Then, based on your device’s model no., look for the appropriate firmware build from above.

You can identify the model no. using an app called Droid Info, or simply check it on its packaging box, or under Settings > About. Another solid trick would be to look at the packaging box of your device (in case you can’t power on the device because it is bricked).

Now that you know the model no., download the latest firmware from above for that model no. exactly.

Next, install the firmware on your Galaxy A5 by following the guide linked right below.

How to install a firmware

First, read our disclaimer, then take backup and then follow the guide below to install the firmware.

Disclaimer: Installing an official firmware through Odin doesn’t void your device’s warranty, but it remains an unofficial process and thus you need to be cautious of it. In any case, you only are responsible for your device. We won’t be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

Backup, backup, backup! Create an appropriate backup of contacts, pictures, videos, songs and other important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have a backup of all your important files. Sometimes, firmware installation may delete everything on your device! Like, when you change the CSC of your device, knowingly or not.

Step-by-step Firmware Installation Guide

Let’s see how to install the firmware on your Galaxy A5. Make sure you have more than 30% battery on your device.

Step 1. Make sure you have downloaded the correct firmware file on your PC. See above for how to download correct firmware file for your Galaxy A5 and download links.

Step 2. Install Samsung USB driver (method 1 on the linked page) first of all. Double-click the .exe file of drivers to begin the installation. (Not required if you have already done this.)

Step 3. Also, download Odin PC software (latest version).

Step 4. Extract the firmware file now. You can use a free software like 7-zip for this. Install 7-zip, then right click on firmware file and under 7-zip, select ‘Extract here’. You should get a file in .tar.md5 format now. (You may get 4 or more files, with AP, BL, CP or CSC etc. written at the beginning of those files.) We will be loading this file into Odin, to be installed on the device (in step 10 below).

Step 5. Extract the Odin file. You should get the Odin exe file (other files could be hidden, hence not visible).

Step 6. Disconnect your Galaxy A5 from PC if it is connected.

Step 7. Boot into download mode:

  • Power off your device. Wait for 6-7 seconds after screen goes off.
  • Press and hold the three buttons Volume down + Home + Power together until you see the Warning screen.
  • Press Volume Up to continue to download mode.

Step 8. Double click on Odin .exe file (from step 5) to open the Odin window as shown below. Be careful with Odin, and do just as said to prevent problems.

Odin-3.10.6

Step 9. Connect your device now using the USB cable. Odin should recognize your device. It’s a must. When it recognizes, you will see Added!! message appearing in the Log box in the bottom left, and the first box under ID:COM will also show a no. and turn its background blue. Look at the pic below.

Odin-3.10.6-Added-message
  • You cannot proceed until you get the Added!! message, which confirms that Odin has recognized your device.
  • If you don’t get Added!! message, you need to install/re-install drivers again, and use the original cable that came with the device. Mostly, drivers are the problem (look at step 2 above).
  • You can try different USB ports on your PC too.

Step 10. Load the firmware file into Odin. Click the AP button on Odin and the select the .tar.md5 file from above.

Load the firmware files(s) on your device. This depends on how many files you got in step 4 above upon extracting the firmware .zip file.

Case 1: If you got a single .tar/.tar.md5 file, then load this into AP tab of your Odin software. Then go to next step.

To load the file, click on AP tab, select the single firmware file starting with AP text, wait for it to load, and then skip to step 11, ignoring the rest of the part of this step.

Case 2: If you got more than one .tar/.tar.md5 file, then you must be having files starting with AP, CSC, Home_CSC, BL, CP, etc. stuff. In this case, choose the files as follows. Select the firmware files as follows.

  • Click on BL tab, and select the file beginning with BL text.
  • Click on AP tab, and select the file beginning with AP text.
  • Click on CP tab, and select the file beginning with CP text.
  • [Different] Click on CSC tab, and select the file beginning with HOME_CSC text. If HOME_CSC file isn’t available, then select the file beginning with CSC text.

About CSC file: Using the HOME_CSC file won’t reset your device, and data on the phone shouldn’t be deleted. However, when we select regular CSC file, and it results in CSC on the device being different than that in CSC file, your phone will be formatted automatically. You can even choose to ignore loading the CSC file, that may do alright too. But if it doesn’t work out, repeat the whole process and select CSC file this time around.

  • Info: When you load files, Odin checks the md5 of firmware file, which takes time. So, simply wait until that’s done and the firmware file is loaded. Don’t worry if Odin gets unresponsive for a while, it’s normal. Binary size will also show up in Odin.
Odin-3.10.6-Firmware-loaded-after-md5-check

Step 11. Click on Options tab, and make sure Re-partition checkbox is NOT selected. Don’t use PIT tab, ever.

Go back to Log tab now, as it will show the progress of firmware installation when you hit the start button in next step.

Re-partition-Remains-Off

Step 12. Verify that everything is okay as mentioned above. When satisfied, click the Start button on Odin now to start flashing the firmware on your device.

Wait till installation is finished, after which your device will reboot automatically. You’ll get PASS message as shown below upon successful installation from Odin.

Odin-3.10.6-Pass-Message-Appears

Some errors you may run into, and with respective solution.

  • If Odin gets stuck at setup connection, then you need to do this all again. Disconnect your device, close Odin, boot device into download mode again, open Odin, and then select the file and flash it again as said above.
  • If you get FAIL in the top left box, then also you need to flash the file again as stated just above.

That’s it. Let the device restart automatically.

The first start of the device may take time, so wait patiently again. When it has, verify the installation. Check the Settings > About device, to confirm new build no. based on the firmware you just installed.

Firmware Benefits

You can use the firmware for a variety of purposes, which includes:

  • Fix your Galaxy A5 if it’s giving you force closes errors and restarts randomly.
  • Unbrick your Galaxy A5 if it’s bootlooping and stuck at logo when restarting.
  • Go Back to Stock on your Galaxy A5 — helps when looking to sell the device, or fix installing OTA updates if broken.
  • Restore Galaxy A5 to factory state.
  • Upgrade your Galaxy A5 to newer Android version.
  • Downgrade your Galaxy A5 to lower build no. at same Android version.
  • Unroot your Galaxy A5.
  • Remove custom recovery like TWRP and CWM, if installed, on your Galaxy A5.

To perform any of the above, simply install the firmware meant for your device, as per its Galaxy A5 firmware in Settings > About device.

Zenfone-3-security-patch

A new update is rolling out for the Asus Zenfone 3, and given the OEM’s history with updates, it’s no wonder — even though fully embarrassing — that its flagship device, the Zenfone 3 (ZU680KL), is receiving the October security patch now, in January 2017.

The update comes as build number V13.6.15.21_20161215, and brings Google’s monthly security patch for the month of October when we’re seeing January patch for a device like Huawei P8. The update also installs bug fixes and other performance and stability improvements over the previous build.

Last month, the Zenfone 3 was spotted running Nougat, but that does not guarantee the update to roll out any time soon. This is mainly because Asus has a bad reputation when it comes to software updates, with smartphones lagging behind by half a year or more in some cases.

The Zenfone 3 comes in many variants set at different price brackets. The highest end Zenfone 3 Deluxe still hasn’t received its update to Nougat whereas competing OEMs have already updated their smartphones to Nougat.

CES should unveil some cool tech from Asus this year. Previously they held their their low light performance capabilities in their smartphones, but they’ll have to do much better than that now with Apple and Google taking the lead in camera technology.

Latest news

February 22, 2019: Samsung today released its first Android 9 Pie update for the Galaxy A7 2018 edition. The update is available for the users in India, and it’s available as beta right now.

The Galaxy A7 2018 Pie update comes as software version ZSB4 (or A750FXXU1ZSB4 in full). We already knew that the Android Pie update for the device was around the corner thanks to its certification as given below, and today it so proved.

Galaxy-A7-2018-Android-Pie-beta

January 17, 2019: Having launched with Android Oreo, it was never in doubt that the Galaxy A7 2018 would receive an update to Android 9 Pie. A few weeks ago, the phone appeared on Geekbench running Pie and this week, the Wi-Fi Alliance has cleared model SM-A750FN running Pie, suggesting that the launch is near.

Of course, it will take several weeks before the final release of the OS following this certification. According to a recent Android 9 Pie release roadmap published in the Samsung Members app, the Galaxy A7 2018 should receive Pie in April 2019, which makes sense that the device has received WFA certification at this point in time.

Original article below:

We’ll talk the general software updates for the Galaxy A7 here, for the original edition to latest one, all A7 sets ever released by Samsung. And not only we’ll we talk about major OS upgrades, but we will also get you info about all software updates (with changelog), and along with firmware download links.

So, yeah, we have news about Pie update – you know, eligibility and expected release date – for the Galaxy A7 2015, Galaxy A7 2016, Galaxy A7 2017, and Galaxy A7 2018. Note that Samsung is yet to come out with its Pie plans, and we hope they do that pretty soon.

Having launched with Lollipop Android 5.1.1 installed, the Galaxy A5 2017 has been updated by Samsung to Marshmallow, and Android 7.0 Nougat OS. Getting two major Android updates is usually all that a device gets, so we would consider it End Of life situation for the A5 2016, and thus do not expect Samsung to release the Android 8.0 Oreo update for it.

Except the newly launched Galaxy A7 2018 with a triple-camera setup at the back, none of the old crops of Galaxy A7 handsets will be receiving an official update to the new Android 9 Pie OS. For more, see our Samsung Android 9 Pie update plans story here. The A7 2018 has already been spotted in benchmarks with Pie running the show, suggesting that an update should be released soon after the S9, S9+ and Note 9, probably alongside the Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note 8.

The Galaxy A7 2017 has already been upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo, the second major OS update the device has received since its debut with Marshmallow. With that said, there won’t be a miraculous third major OS upgrade for the A7 2017, but if lucky, you may have to turn to custom ROMs in order to bring Pie to this device. Or maybe someone might just get lucky, at least if this benchmark is to be believed.

One-UI-update-download

Samsung One UI

Given that Samsung will be rolling out official Pie update to the Galaxy A7 2018, there is a small chance One UI could accompany the Pie update to this device. However, no official word is available at the moment for the device, but we won’t be surprised if it misses out on the One UI either because Samsung is no stranger to such stunts. It’s only a matter of time before we find out this, though.
